Sunday School

Sunday school at St. Peter's
Sunday school starts in mid September and runs through early June. Sunday school meets every Sunday morning from 10:00a.m. until 10:50 a.m. We then join our families upstairs for Holy Communion. Classes meet in the classrooms in the undercroft according to the child's grade level. All of the rooms have recently been carpeted and painted. Two of the rooms have beautiful murals on the walls.
We use materials from Gospel Light to teach the children about God, Jesus, prayer, morals and values. Each lesson relates facts about an animal to a particular Bible verse. The children love learning about the animals and God in this unique way.
We also have a children's service on some Sundays. The service is based on the Book of Common Prayer. The children's service reflects the look and feel of the adult service taking place upstairs. It usually takes place before group activities. Group activities include making items for soup baskets for sick or shut-in parishioners, making crafts, preparing for performances or playing games.
Our children are offered a variety of other activities to do as well. They can take part in the chime choir or the vocal choir. We also have special performances from time to time such as the creation play. The children can go to Sleep-Away-Camp during the summer. This past summer we had eight of our elementary children attend, and they had a great time! Pastor Barbara also works with our youth on multi-generational activities. Our most recent being the pet memorial service for St. Francis Day.
We also have outreach projects that we work on as a group. We have already started our first project called Pennies for the Planet, which is a national campaign sponsored by the Audubon Society. As our church strives towards going green, we are helping save habitats for animals in three regions of the United States. On the East Coast of Maine we are helping the puffins and other sea birds. In South Carolina we are helping to save some of the oldest Cyprus trees and alligators in Four Holes Swamp, and in Wyoming, we are helping to save an area known as the Sagebrush Sea for a variety of wildlife that depends on it. This project runs until the end of November. Later in the year we will be working on another project for Canine Helpers. Canine Helpers is a group that trains dogs for people with disabilities. We will collect some supplies that they need, as well as give them a donation that the children will collect.
As you can see, we are a very busy and active Sunday school. We have over twenty-five students in grades Pre-K through five. Our middle school children continue their Christian education in Rite 13 and from there go on to our Journey to Adulthood program. We are very blessed to have a great Christian education program staffed by wonderful teachers. Please come and see all the great things St. Peter's Sunday school education department has to offer you and your family.
