Sunday School
Sunday school meets every Sunday morning starting on the third week of September
and running through the second week of June from 10:00 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. We
then join our families upstairs for Holy Communion.
The elementary
department of Sunday school has fifteen children who come on a regular basis.
This does not include our nursery or occasional attendees. Melissa Lopat teaches
the preschoolers. Della Harris and Maria Matthews teach grades K-2. Jerry and
Alison Mohr teach grades 3 & 4. We also have a few very dependable
substitute teachers in Lois Tripp, Sue Gunn and Sharon Taube.
Over the
summer, the teachers created a new children's service, which we use downstairs.
The new service is a combination of some older services that we have used in the
past, as well as newly added material, which comes mostly from the Book of
Common Prayer. We wanted the service to reflect the look and feel of the
service upstairs.
In addition to our regular curriculum and children's
services, we have kept very busy with parties, performances, camp and outreach
projects. We have parties to celebrate Easter, the end of the Sunday school
year, the fall harvest and Christmas/Epiphany. The children make crafts, play
games and enjoy treats and gifts. This year our children have preformed
throughout the year singing, playing chimes, and by telling poems and jokes.
Five of our third and fourth graders went to Sleep-A-Way camp in Dunkirk this
summer. They really enjoyed camp and walked away with a renewed and transformed
relationship with the Spirit. Children collected money in their mite boxes to
donate to the Buffalo Zoo for the elephant house project, collected school
supplies for Windemere Elementary School and with the help of the church,
collected money to purchase many life sustaining animals for people around the
world through the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund.
With the help of Pastor Barbara, we have also had two very successful
adult/children sermons upstairs with follow-up activities downstairs. We had one
to celebrate St. Francis day complete with the blessing of our real and stuffed
animals. The other one was for Thanksgiving. We will continue this new tradition
this year.
The Sunday school is responsible for the bulletin board in the
undercroft. Our teachers took turns making the attractive displays, usually
reflecting the church seasons. Janet Guarino, has also helped us greatly with
this project.
Lastly, if you haven't already done so, please look in our
classrooms. Through monies in the Meath Memorial, we were able to repaint the
classrooms, purchase rugs, furniture and children's Bibles. Our preschool room
has a beautiful mural painted by Maria Sanchez-Clarke. Look for more murals to
come!
We are very blessed to have a wonderful Sunday school program. Our
children and teachers are great. We would like to thank all of the people from
St. Peter's for their support.
Please email or call Alison Mohr with any
questions. (jrm1912@msn.com 834-8466) We would love to have
your children join us!
